POD 2 Winding Methodology

The most frequently asked question about the POD unit is the winding methodology. While there may be other methods of winding, an adapted version of the unidirectional methodology has been found to be highly effective, and is explained below. This 4 layer 11 ohm set is simple, economical, and highly effective.

 

  1. Face the "nail head" (or equivalent) directly
  2. Start winding from directly behind that head CCW back towards the
    rear of the core.
  3. Same with the ring. Locate the ring around the core as it will be
    at final assembly and wind CCW from the "face" end (i.e. nail head)
    back to the rear.
  4. Same with the outer steel coil / core.
  5. After winding: connect the rear (end) core coil lead to the front
    (start) end of the 1st ring coil winding.
  6. Connect the end (rear) of the 1st ring coil winding to the start
    (front) of the 2nd ring coil winding.
  7. Connect the end of the 2nd ring coil winding to the start of the
    outer steel coil.
  8. So all connections energize all coils in the same direction.

Winding layer 1:

Face the "nail head" (or equivalent) directly. Start winding from directly behind that head CCW back towards the rear of the core.

 

 

 

Winding 2:

Winding number two is 175 turns of #30 AWG wire going counter clockwise from the head to the end of the nail over the ring magnets. Same methodology as layer 1, except around the ring magnet.

 

 

 

Winding 3:

Repeat previous methodology. These winding are insulated from winding 2 by a thin tape layer (in orange).

 

 

 

 

Winding 4:

Repeat previous methodology, except with 40 turns of insulated steel round the outside. Basic steel wire can be wound with simple masking tape for insulation, or any other method you can think of such as thin plastic tubing.
